PUBLISHED TUNINGS AND KEYS

In page 23 of the introduction to the 1840 volume of The Ancient Music of Ireland, Bunting
focusses on the following two tunings:-
1
all naturals with the second F below middle C, variously called by him
téad leagaidh or falling string or high bass key
flat key
fuáil bheag
for keys D natural, C natural and A natural
2
one sharp with the second E below middle C, variously known as
leithghléas
natural key
aon fhuáil
for keys G one sharp and E one sharp
Elsewhere in the Introduction, Bunting also mentions a D major scale known as
fuáil mhór
The D major scale is referred to as the 'key of D two sharps' in Bunting's vocabulary in MS34
f58r.  In p23 of the 1840 introduction, Bunting describes a tuning which apparently involved
retuning the C above middle C to C#.  He indicates that the latter tuning was
seldom used.
